The history of this prayer is quite fascinating. Sometime between 1884 and 1886 during a celebration of mass. Pope Leo XIII experienced a vision in which demons and evil forces were gathering around the church. He wrote this prayer to combat the evil he'd seen in his vision. The prayer to St. Michael is still used to day to combat the presence of evil in all its forms.

St. Michael the Archangel,

Be our protection against the 
wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;

O Prince of the Heavenly host,
